GCSE Results:
How to Check Your Marks and Request a Remark

After GCSE Results Day, students should check the marks for every subject and compare them with the relevant grade boundaries. If you are only a few marks away from the next grade, it is worth considering a 'Review of Marking'.

Use our simple steps below to save you time and increase those grades you worked hard for!

Don’t Assume Your School Will Check

Schools may not check every student's grades or request reviews automatically. Some may focus particularly on English and Maths, as these subjects contribute to key school performance measures.

How to Quickly Check Your GCSE Marks and Request a Remark

1. Check your marks using the grade boundary links below.

   AQA - Edexcel - OCR  - WJEC

2. Identify subjects where you are close to the next grade (1-3 marks).

3. Email your school quickly as the exam board deadline is 24th September 2026. Your school may charge a fee for remarking (more details beow). Here is a template to save you time:

Subject: Review of Marking – GCSE

         Dear Exams Officer,

I am writing regarding [Student]’s GCSE result in [Subject].

My child received a grade [X] and was only [X] marks below the next grade up.

We would be grateful if you could let us know the procedure for accessing the exam script and requesting a Review of Marking (remark).

Kind regards, [Parent/Student]

Do GCSE Grades Actually Change?

Yes. Official Ofqual figures for GCSEs in summer 2025 show:

• 243,150 GCSE grades were challenged, 58,725 grades changed, 24.1% increased, less than 0.1% decreased

That means approximately 1 in 4 challenged GCSE grades went up following a review of marking. Source: Ofqual – Summer 2025 Review of Marking statistics.

How Much Does a Remark Cost?

A Review of Marking typically costs around £50 per paper, although fees vary by exam board. Some schools may cover the cost, while others may ask parents to pay. The fee may also get refunded if your grade changes.

If you found this useful, please share it with other GCSE parents.
